    18\u00a0<\/span>When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered.<\/span> 2\u00a0<\/sup>Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples.<\/span> 3\u00a0<\/sup>So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons.<\/span> 4\u00a0<\/sup>Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, \u201cWhom do you seek?\u201d<\/span><\/span> 5\u00a0<\/sup>They answered him, \u201cJesus of Nazareth.\u201d Jesus said to them, \u201cI am he.\u201d[a<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.<\/span> 6\u00a0<\/sup>When Jesus[b<\/a>]<\/sup> said to them, \u201cI am he,\u201d<\/span> they drew back and fell to the ground.<\/span> 7\u00a0<\/sup>So he asked them again, \u201cWhom do you seek?\u201d<\/span> And they said, \u201cJesus of Nazareth.\u201d<\/span> 8\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus answered, \u201cI told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go.\u201d<\/span><\/span> 9\u00a0<\/sup>This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: \u201cOf those whom you gave me I have lost not one.\u201d<\/span><\/span> 10\u00a0<\/sup>Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant[c<\/a>]<\/sup> and cut off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)<\/span> 11\u00a0<\/sup>So Jesus said to Peter, \u201cPut your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

    Jesus Faces Annas and Caiaphas<\/span><\/h3>

    12\u00a0<\/sup>So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews[d<\/a>]<\/sup> arrested Jesus and bound him.<\/span> 13\u00a0<\/sup>First they led him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.<\/span> 14\u00a0<\/sup>It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people.<\/span><\/p>

    Peter Denies Jesus<\/span><\/h3>

    15\u00a0<\/sup>Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest,<\/span> 16\u00a0<\/sup>but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in.<\/span> 17\u00a0<\/sup>The servant girl at the door said to Peter, \u201cYou also are not one of this man’s disciples, are you?\u201d He said, \u201cI am not.\u201d<\/span> 18\u00a0<\/sup>Now the servants[e<\/a>]<\/sup> and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.<\/span><\/p>

    The High Priest Questions Jesus<\/span><\/h3>

    19\u00a0<\/sup>The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.<\/span> 20\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus answered him, \u201cI have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret.<\/span><\/span> 21\u00a0<\/sup>Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them; they know what I said.\u201d<\/span><\/span> 22\u00a0<\/sup>When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, \u201cIs that how you answer the high priest?\u201d<\/span> 23\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus answered him, \u201cIf what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?\u201d<\/span><\/span> 24\u00a0<\/sup>Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.<\/span><\/p>

    Peter Denies Jesus Again<\/span><\/h3>

    25\u00a0<\/sup>Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, \u201cYou also are not one of his disciples, are you?\u201d He denied it and said, \u201cI am not.\u201d<\/span> 26\u00a0<\/sup>One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, \u201cDid I not see you in the garden with him?\u201d<\/span> 27\u00a0<\/sup>Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed.<\/span><\/p>

    Jesus Before Pilate<\/span><\/h3>

    28\u00a0<\/sup>Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters.[f<\/a>]<\/sup> It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor’s headquarters, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover.<\/span> 29\u00a0<\/sup>So Pilate went outside to them and said, \u201cWhat accusation do you bring against this man?\u201d<\/span> 30\u00a0<\/sup>They answered him, \u201cIf this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.\u201d<\/span> 31\u00a0<\/sup>Pilate said to them, \u201cTake him yourselves and judge him by your own law.\u201d The Jews said to him, \u201cIt is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.\u201d<\/span> 32\u00a0<\/sup>This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to die.<\/span><\/p>

    My Kingdom Is Not of This World<\/span><\/h3>

    33\u00a0<\/sup>So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, \u201cAre you the King of the Jews?\u201d<\/span> 34\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus answered, \u201cDo you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?\u201d<\/span><\/span> 35\u00a0<\/sup>Pilate answered, \u201cAm I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?\u201d<\/span> 36\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus answered, \u201cMy kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.\u201d<\/span><\/span> 37\u00a0<\/sup>Then Pilate said to him, \u201cSo you are a king?\u201d Jesus answered, \u201cYou say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world\u2014to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.\u201d<\/span><\/span> 38\u00a0<\/sup>Pilate said to him, \u201cWhat is truth?\u201d<\/span><\/p>

    After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, \u201cI find no guilt in him.<\/span> 39\u00a0<\/sup>But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover.
