    Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John\u2014<\/span> 2\u00a0<\/sup>although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples.<\/span> 3\u00a0<\/sup>So he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee.<\/span><\/p>

    4\u00a0<\/sup>Now he had to go through Samaria.<\/span> 5\u00a0<\/sup>So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph.<\/span> 6\u00a0<\/sup>Jacob\u2019s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.<\/span><\/p>

    7\u00a0<\/sup>When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, \u201cWill you give me a drink?\u201d<\/span><\/span> 8\u00a0<\/sup>(His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)<\/span><\/p>

    19\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cSir,\u201d the woman said, \u201cI can see that you are a prophet.<\/span> 20\u00a0<\/sup>Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

    21\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cWoman,\u201d<\/span> Jesus replied, \u201cbelieve me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.<\/span><\/span> 22\u00a0<\/sup>You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.<\/span><\/span> 23\u00a0<\/sup>Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.<\/span><\/span> 24\u00a0<\/sup>God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

    25\u00a0<\/sup>The woman said, \u201cI know that Messiah\u201d (called Christ) \u201cis coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

    26\u00a0<\/sup>Then Jesus declared, \u201cI, the one speaking to you\u2014I am he.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

    The Disciples Rejoin Jesus<\/span><\/h3>

    27\u00a0<\/sup>Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, \u201cWhat do you want?\u201d or \u201cWhy are you talking with her?\u201d<\/span><\/p>

    28\u00a0<\/sup>Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people,<\/span> 29\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cCome, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?\u201d<\/span> 30\u00a0<\/sup>They came out of the town and made their way toward him.<\/span><\/p>

    31\u00a0<\/sup>Meanwhile his disciples urged him, \u201cRabbi, eat something.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

    Many Samaritans Believe<\/span><\/h3>

    39\u00a0<\/sup>Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman\u2019s testimony, \u201cHe told me everything I ever did.\u201d<\/span> 40\u00a0<\/sup>So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days.<\/span> 41\u00a0<\/sup>And because of his words many more became believers.<\/span><\/p>

    42\u00a0<\/sup>They said to the woman, \u201cWe no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

    Jesus Heals an Official\u2019s Son<\/span><\/h3>

    43\u00a0<\/sup>After the two days he left for Galilee.<\/span> 44\u00a0<\/sup>(Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)<\/span> 45\u00a0<\/sup>When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, for they also had been there.<\/span><\/p>

    46\u00a0<\/sup>Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum.<\/span> 47\u00a0<\/sup>When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.<\/span><\/p>

    48\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cUnless you people see signs and wonders,\u201d<\/span> Jesus told him, \u201cyou will never believe.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

    49\u00a0<\/sup>The royal official said, \u201cSir, come down before my child dies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

    50\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cGo,\u201d<\/span> Jesus replied, \u201cyour son will live.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

    The man took Jesus at his word and departed.<\/span> 51\u00a0<\/sup>While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living.<\/span> 52\u00a0<\/sup>When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, \u201cYesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

    53\u00a0<\/sup>Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, \u201cYour son will live.\u201d<\/span> So he and his whole household believed.<\/span><\/p>

    48\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cUnless you people see signs and wonders,\u201d<\/span> Jesus told him, \u201cyou will never believe.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

    49\u00a0<\/sup>The royal official said, \u201cSir, come down before my child dies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

    50\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cGo,\u201d<\/span> Jesus replied, \u201cyour son will live.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

    The man took Jesus at his word and departed.<\/span> 51\u00a0<\/sup>While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living.<\/span> 52\u00a0<\/sup>When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, \u201cYesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

    53\u00a0<\/sup>Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, \u201cYour son will live.\u201d<\/span> So he and his whole household believed.<\/span><\/p>
